Our Guide Shadow Program is designed for passionate anglers who want to learn what it truly takes to become a professional fly fishing guide on the legendary North Platte River, including the famous Grey Reef and Miracle Mile.

This program gives participants the opportunity to work alongside our experienced guides, observe real guide trips, and gain firsthand knowledge of the skills required to run successful trips on one of the best trout fisheries in the country. Grey Reef Anglers

What is the Guide Shadow Program?

The Grey Reef Anglers Guide Shadow Program is a hands-on learning experience for aspiring guides or individuals looking to improve their fly fishing game on the river with 1 on 1 instruction. You will even spend time on the water shadowing our professional guide staff during real client trips.  The coarse is designed to give you the most access to the knowledge base of a 25yr veteran guide of the North Platte River.

Participants will learn:

  • How professional guides prepare for a day on the river
  • Boat control and safe drift boat operation
  • Reading water and locating productive trout water
  • Rigging systems used for North Platte River conditions
  • Client communication and hospitality
  • Trip logistics and guide responsibilities
  • Fly selection and seasonal patterns
  • Advanced Fly Fishing Techniques for the North Platte River and Trout water in general.
  • River etiquette and safety

Our guides have decades of combined experience fishing the Grey Reef and Miracle Mile sections of the North Platte River, widely known for producing large rainbow and brown trout. Grey Reef Anglers

What You Will Experience

During the program,

Participants will join our guides for up to 8 days on the water observing how a professional guide operates.  Fishing right along side your guide giving you advance fishing techniques proven over decades of guiding experience.  Boat and Wade fishing split in half each day depending on conditions.

Typical learning experiences include:

On-the-Water Instruction

Shadow guides while they run full guided float trips. Learn how guides manage boats, clients, and fishing strategy throughout the day.

Drift Boat Skills

Learn the fundamentals of rowing a drift boat in wind, current, and varying water flows — a critical skill for any guide on the North Platte.

Fly Fishing Techniques

Learn the techniques commonly used on our river system including:

  • Indicator nymphing
  • Dry fly fishing
  • Streamer fishing
  • Seasonal pattern selection
  • Drift management

Client Experience

Learn how professional guides create memorable trips by focusing on customer service, safety, and education.

Price:  ALL Inc. Package Includes All meals, beverages, instructor each day, use of Clackacraft and Stealthcraft drift boats, use of all fishing gear, Casper airport shuttle if needed, transportation to and from the river each day.
